The panels convert the sun's energy into DC power, which is then stored in the batteries until the energy is used by the home. This allows it to operate independently of the utility grid.
While this technology appears to be very cool, it is not feasible for the vast majority of customers.
Less than 1% of all solar systems installed worldwide each year use battery technology to store solar energy. For most homes, batteries are currently too expensive and unreliable. The large electrical loads found in most homes (such as air conditioning, clothes dryers, water heating, and so on) require far too much immediate power to be drawn entirely from batteries. Instead, they employ a method in which the system is linked to the power grid.
With this method, energy is used in real time by the home or business, and any excess is fed back into the utility grid. The utility then monitors how much energy is returned to the grid. When the solar customer is not producing power, they draw it from the grid.
By doing so, you are effectively using the grid as a battery without the expense or upkeep of batteries. It's much less expensive and works flawlessly. Simple Solar currently only offers grid-connected systems.
